CHILD POVERTY

With the compounded effects of the COVID-19 and humanitarian situation, Myanmar has suffered significant economic losses and reverted the progress in poverty reduction that country made in the last 10 years. Over 80% of households has been reporting food as primary need across all conflict affected areas of Myanmar. With increases in food prices of over 60% in last two years and over 15.2 million of food insecure people across the country, Myanmar faces a significant humanitarian crisis.

Humanitarian situation has caused significant job losses, with International Labour Organization (ILO)estimating 2.1 million full time jobs lost in the last two years. The effects of crisis have been much more significant for rural households across the country, with asset-poor agricultural households representing the most impoverished population (with poverty levels reaching 78%). Significant regional disparities emphasize critical conditions in some of the most crisis affected areas of the country where proportion of food insecure households reaches over 50% of the population.

Over the next two years, Save the Children Myanmar will deliver lifesaving cash and food children and families most in need, provide cash support to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, support families to access jobs and generate income, teach youth technical skills to support their employment and facilitate home gardening for families in crisis.

OUR GOALS 2022-2024

STRATEGIC GOAL 1: Our goal is to ensure that children and families affected by poverty have enough food in times of crisis and are able to increase family income as they recover.
